What Is a Cubic Metre of Soil or Mulch?
A cubic metre (m³) is the unit of volume we use to sell all of our bulk landscaping products. Some landscaping suppliers sell their products by weight (tonnes) rather than by volume.
We believe measuring by the cubic metre provides a more accurate and transparent pricing structure, as wet weather and other natural conditions can affect the weight of certain products. This means buying by weight can sometimes result in you paying more for the same volume of material than you otherwise would.
One cubic metre is calculated using the following dimensions:
If you're collecting a cubic metre of mulch rather than soil, keep in mind that, due to its larger particle size, mulch weighs significantly less than soil.
In practical terms, 1 m³ of loose mulch will generally fill a standard 1.8 m × 1.2 m garden trailer to capacity.
1 m³ of garden soil weighs approximately 1.3–1.6 tonnes, depending on its moisture content. Because of this, we generally recommend carrying no more than 0.3 m³ (approximately one-third of a cubic metre) in a standard garden trailer.
