Frequently Asked Questions

Hoop Bark is a larger, curled bark mulch that interlocks to stay in place while still allowing airflow and water penetration. Hoop Pine Fines is a much finer mulch that provides a more compact and manicured appearance.

Hoop Bark can be used for garden beds, around trees and shrubs, landscaping borders, and general decorative mulching applications. It is particularly well suited to sloping areas due to its interlocking structure.

Hoop Bark is very durable and breaks down slowly compared to many other mulches. Hoop Bark can last between 1–2 years before requiring replenishment.

To calculate how much Hoop Bark you need for your project, measure the length and width of the area where the mulch will be placed.

Next, determine the desired depth of mulch. If you are mulching new garden beds or existing soil, we generally recommend a depth of approximately 50–75mm. If you are simply topping up already mulched areas, we recommend a depth of approximately 25mm.

Once you have your length, width, and depth measurements, you can use our cubic metre calculator above or calculate the volume manually using the following formula:

Volume = Length × Width × Height

Generally, mulch can be spread at a depth of 50–100mm, depending on the type of mulch.

For Hoop Bark, a depth of 75–100mm is recommended to help keep the mulch in place. These mulches are often lighter and have greater airflow, so they benefit from thicker coverage.

For your medium mulches, we recommend a depth of 50–70mm for good coverage. This depth is thick enough to suppress weeds while still allowing good moisture retention.

For finer mulches, a depth of 20–50mm is usually suitable, as they are more likely to compact.

Our Hoop Bark (Hoop Pine Mulch 1 inch) is a premium, naturally curly bark mulch made from screened hoop pine. With its rich dark brown colouring and distinctive stringy texture, this mulch is designed to lock together once applied, creating a stable, protective layer over your soil that performs exceptionally well in both residential and commercial landscaping.

Widely used across Brisbane and Bayside gardens, hoop pine mulch is especially valued for sloped sites, embankments, and exposed garden beds where stability and long-lasting coverage are essential. Its open structure allows water to penetrate easily while still helping to retain moisture and protect plant roots.

Hoop Bark (Hoop Pine Mulch) Benefits:
