Premium Potting Mix

Our potting mix is made from a balanced blend of composted hardwood sawdust, fine sand, and premium mulch.

Potting mixes are generally grouped into three categories: seed-starting mixes, specialised mixes, and all-purpose potting mixes.

Seed-starting mixes are best for germinating seeds or rooting cuttings. If you are growing cacti, succulents, orchids, African violets, or citrus trees, a specialised mix will give you the best results.

For herbs, flowers, and most common plants, an all-purpose mix like our Premium Potting Mix is the most suitable choice.

Potting mix is designed to be lightweight and free-draining, allowing proper airflow and drainage for potted plants. Garden soil, on the other hand, is heavier and designed for in-ground use, with sand, silt, and clay components that help retain moisture.

Garden soil should not be used in pots, as it relies on the surrounding soil ecosystem to maintain structure and prevent compaction. In containers, its heaviness can suffocate plant roots and hold excess moisture, leading to root rot.

As a general rule, potting mix should be refreshed or replaced once a year to promote healthy plant growth. A yearly refresh will keep your plants happy and healthy.

In some instances, you may need to replace your potting soil sooner if it becomes depleted, compacted, or hydrophobic. If water drains too quickly through your pots when watering, this is usually a sign that the mix has low organic matter and is no longer retaining moisture effectively for plant uptake.
