Gypsum is commonly used to help break up clay soils by creating air pockets that improve water penetration and root growth. It also has a neutral pH, making it safe to use around most plants.

Note: Gypsum is only effective on certain soil types, including heavy clay, sodic, and magnesic soils.

At our recommended application rate of 200–500 g per m², a 25 kg bag of gypsum will cover approximately 50–125 square metres.

Gypsum can be applied at any time of year. However, if you are applying gypsum seasonally for soil maintenance, Autumn and Winter are often ideal times to spread it. This allows the gypsum to begin improving the soil structure before the active growing seasons of Spring and Summer.

Yes, gypsum can significantly improve clay soil structure and drainage — but only if it is used on the correct soil type. One simple way to test whether your clay soil will respond well to gypsum is by performing a jar test.

The Jar Test:

Dig out approximately one tablespoon of your clay soil, place it into a jar of water, and shake it thoroughly.

• If the soil sinks to the bottom of the jar and the water remains clear, there is likely not enough sodium present for gypsum to be effective.
• If the water becomes cloudy and much of the soil remains suspended, gypsum is likely to work well in helping break apart the soil structure.
