80/20 Under Turf is an under-turf blend composed of 80% sand and 20% soil that is used for laying new lawns. The sand component of the mix helps to improve drainage and level your lawn area, while the soil component provides nutrients to your new turf to encourage root growth.

To calculate how much 80/20 Under Turf you need for your project, measure the length and width of the area where the soil will be placed.

Next, determine the desired depth of soil. If you are laying a new lawn, we generally recommend a depth of approximately 50-100mm depending on your soil quality.

Once you have your length, width, and depth measurements, you can use our cubic metre calculator above or calculate the volume manually using the following formula: Volume = Length x Width x Height

For new turf installations, we generally recommend spreading 80/20 Under Turf Blend to a depth of 50–100mm, depending on the quality of your existing soil.

If your soil is poor, compacted, or lacking organic matter, a thicker layer is recommended to provide a better foundation for turf establishment.

Yes, 80/20 Under Turf is suitable for all lawn types, including buffalo, couch, kikuyu, zoysia, and blue couch lawns. It is an especially great choice if you are working with clay-heavy soil bases.

While it is not essential, we strongly recommend applying a starter fertiliser over your 80/20 Under Turf Blend before laying turf. Products like our LSA Lawn Launcher provide additional nutrients to encourage rapid root development and establishment. They also improve moisture retention, which is particularly important during the first few weeks while your new lawn is being watered regularly.

This high-quality sandy loam has excellent drainage properties which promote deep root growth for your turf or plants. This loam has applications as an under turf and is a great option for growing native plants, ferns and palms. Consisting of a mix of 80% washed sand, and 20% natural washed soil it is fast draining (great for root growth) and can be used safely at higher depths without the need for excessive compaction. This loam also works well when built upon a clay base – which makes it a great option for Brisbane locals. Buffalo and Zoysia varieties like our Sir Walter DNA Certified Turf or Empire Zoysia are particularly great for pairing with an 80/20 loam as the roots system can grow deeper than most other turf varieties.

Note: The soil component is processed through a 20mm screening plant. While care is taken during screening, some small rocks may still be present in the final product.
