To calculate how much Hardwood Chip you need for your project, measure the length and width of the area where the chip will be placed.

Next, determine the desired depth of the chip. If you are mulching new garden beds or existing soil, we generally recommend a depth of approximately 50–100mm. If you are simply topping up already mulched areas, we recommend a depth of approximately 50mm.

Yes, over time Hardwood Chip will improve your garden soil as it gradually breaks down. It helps improve soil structure, returns organic matter to the soil, and improves moisture retention, creating a healthier environment for beneficial soil microorganisms.

Because hardwood breaks down more slowly than finer mulches, it provides long-term soil improvement rather than a quick nutrient boost. If your soil needs immediate improvement, we recommend applying a quality garden compost first and then using Hardwood Chip as a long-term mulch.
