Frequently Asked Questions

Forest Fines are suitable for garden beds, pathways, playgrounds, and as a ground cover for larger areas. The fibrous texture of this mulch makes it a good choice for erosion control, moisture retention, and weed suppression.

To calculate how much Forest Fines you need for your project, measure the length and width of the area where the mulch will be placed.

Next, determine the desired depth of mulch. If you are mulching new garden beds or existing soil, we generally recommend a depth of approximately 50–75mm. If you are simply topping up already mulched areas, we recommend a depth of approximately 25mm.

Once you have your length, width, and depth measurements, you can use our cubic metre calculator above or calculate the volume manually using the following formula:

Volume = Length × Width × Height

Generally, mulch can be spread at a depth of 50–100mm, depending on the type of mulch.

For Forest Fines, we recommend a depth of 50–70mm for standard mulch coverage. This depth is thick enough to suppress weeds while still allowing good moisture retention.

For coarse barks and mulches, a depth of 75–100mm is recommended to help keep the mulch in place. These mulches are often lighter and have greater airflow, so they benefit from thicker coverage.

For finer mulches, a depth of 20–50mm is usually suitable, as they are more likely to compact.

Yes, as Forest Fines break down, they add nutrients and organic matter back into the soil over time. As our Forest Fines are double-ground, they will break down more quickly than standard Forest Mulch, meaning they will feed your plants and improve your soil at a faster rate.

Are Forest Fines good for weed suppression and moisture retention?

Yes, Forest Fines are a great choice for weed suppression and moisture retention. As they break down, they also feed your plants and improve your soil structure.

Our Forest Fines is a finely textured, double-ground mulch designed to deliver a clean, uniform finish while improving soil health over time. With its rich medium to dark brown appearance, this forest fines mulch blends seamlessly into garden beds, creating a natural look that enhances surrounding plants and landscaping features.

Aged and screened for consistency, Forest Fines binds well to the soil surface, helping to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and gradually enrich the soil as it breaks down. Its finer grade makes it easy to spread and ideal for achieving a neat, professional finish across both residential gardens and large-scale landscaping projects.
