Frequently Asked Questions

Empire Zoysia turf is a semi-shade-tolerant grass that requires 4–5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Like all Zoysia varieties, it performs exceptionally well in full sun and is well suited to the Australian climate.

Empire Zoysia has moderate shade tolerance, handling up to 50% shade in suitable conditions. However, if your yard has heavy shade or large partially shaded areas, we would recommend considering buffalo varieties such as DNA Certified Sir Walter Turf or Palmetto Buffalo Turf.

Empire Zoysia only needs to be watered when required, so there is no fixed watering schedule — it depends on the season and weather conditions. From Autumn through to Winter, natural rainfall is often enough to sustain the lawn. During the hotter Summer months, watering 1–2 times per week will help keep your turf healthy and green.

Empire Zoysia has a deep root system and excellent drought tolerance. One of its unique traits is its ability to signal when it needs water by rolling its leaves inward. If you notice this, it’s time to water your lawn.

Empire Zoysia is a slow-growing turf variety, meaning less mowing is required compared to many other grasses. Mowing every 3–4 weeks at a height of 5–7 cm is the best way to keep your lawn looking neat and uniform.

Note: You may need to increase the mowing frequency during the peak Summer growing season.

Yes, Empire Zoysia is one of the most drought-tolerant turf varieties available thanks to its deep root system and underground runners. It requires minimal watering to survive and continues to perform well during extended dry periods.

Characterised by its emerald green hue, Empire Zoysia Turf requires little maintenance and is a more cost-effective option for those turfing their yard on a budget. This variety of turf requires less mowing and watering compared to other varieties and has a fine, soft leaf, which makes it great for pets and children. It is also resistant to weeds, great at tolerating wear and tear and is unaffected by high temperatures or changes in humidity.

Empire Zoysia turf does a great job of maintaining its dark green hue during the winter months, therefore giving your backyard a lush façade all year round.

Need to know:

  • Watering should be infrequent and deep watering
  • Fertilise your lawn twice a year, in autumn and winter
  • This grass needs to be mown every 3 to 4 weeks
