Tips for choosing the right garden edging

Nothing quite frames a garden better than bordering it with some garden edging. Not only will garden edging add texture and character to your outdoor space, but it is also great at separating your lawn from your garden beds and keeping those pesky weeds at bay. To help you find the perfect edging for your yard design, read on to discover the different edging options available and their unique properties.

Concrete Garden Edging

Concrete garden edging is one of the most common edging options available on the market. Easy to install and simple in design, concrete edging can be used with pavers, rocks and other types of edging to create patterns and textures. Concrete edging is also one of the most durable type of garden edging available on the market. It doesn’t develop issues like warping, rotting and deteriorating and can even withstand extreme weather.

One other point about concrete edging that is important to note is that it is a permanent garden edging solution. This can be one of its selling points but also one of its cons. It means that if you redesign your yard or changed the shape of your garden bed you might need to break up your edging to fit to size or remove it altogether and replace it with something new.

Metal Garden Edging

Currently in vogue, metal garden edging is a staple in modern landscape design and on top of keeping weeds from spreading can be used in artistic ways around your yard. You can opt for a traditional galvanised silver edging, coloured metal edgings or use what the landscapers use and go for a patina red edging. The great thing about using a metal garden edging is that it creates a clean separation between your driveways, paths, pavers, grass and garden beds. Because it is normally installed a fair way below the soil it is one of the most effective edging options for keeping the weeds at bay.

Most metal garden edging variation are built to last and are resistant to frost, torrential rain as well as being strong enough to avoid cracking, chipping and deteriorating quickly.

Timber garden edging

For a more natural look, using timber is a popular option for garden edging and raised planter beds. It looks attractive when paired with lawns, garden beds and even hardscapes borders. It is also very easy to install and perfect for beginners. The only downside when using timber is that it is not as durable and long lasting as other materials. It can be prone to rot over time and becomes a prime target for termites. Just keep in mind that timber garden edging might need to be replaced every once and awhile.

Brick Garden Edging

Another great option for a more permanent garden edging solution is brick garden edging. Like concrete garden edging, brick garden edging will withstand harsh weather conditions and is resistant to rotting, garden pests and deterioration due to the passage of time. However, unlike concrete garden edging, brick edging is easy to shape and manipulate as your garden vision chops and changes over the years. Bricks can also be repurposed if you decide to get rid of your garden bed and can be used to pave and area, create a fire pit or might perhaps be used to block of problem areas in your backyard if you have pets.

Plastic Garden edging

While we don’t stock plastic garden edging here at Rock ‘N’ Soil we would be remiss in not mentioning it. Plastic garden edging is one of the most cost-effective forms of garden out there in the market and is often used for its weed fighting abilities. Like metal garden edging this form of garden edging goes quite deep into the ground, stopping weeds in their tracks. Unfortunately, there is little variety when it comes to the style so it doesn’t look appealing in the garden. It’s look over time isn’t great as it often suffers harshly with weather extremes. This is why we recommend using it with another form of edging to bolster protection from the weeks while still decorating with an edging that will bring character to your space.
